Former Liverpool star Luis Diaz feels leaving the Merseyside club to join Bayern Munich was the right decision.
Colombian winger Luis Diaz hasn’t looked back since making the move to Bayern Munich last summer. Not only has he managed to establish himself as a key figure at the German club under Vincent Kompany, but he also seems to be loving life in Munich.
The 29-year-old has been on fire for the Bundesliga outfit. He has been involved in 32 matches across competitions and has contributed towards 34 goals (19 goals, 15 assists). While leaving Liverpool wasn’t an easy call, Diaz feels he made the right call to move to Bayern.
Luis Diaz on joining Bayern Munich
While speaking to Sky in Germany about his decision to join Bayern Munich, Diaz said, “When FC Bayern approached me, it was clear from the very first moment that I wanted to go through with this transfer. It filled me with pride because I had known the club for a long time and basically understood what to expect there.
“It was a good decision – a decision for an incredible and outstanding team. And when you arrive somewhere new, you naturally want to give your very best, to give 100 per cent and to feel comfortable where you are. Being happy is the most important thing for a player and for his family as well. It was exactly the right move to come here.
“I knew I would be joining an incredibly strong group of footballers and a club with excellent infrastructure and top-class training facilities. I had no doubts about that. The most difficult part for me and my family certainly was and still is the language… but I knew I would fit in very well here and that I would contribute my part to the team’s success – just as I did previously in Liverpool. FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I am trying to repay that trust on the pitch.”
Diaz’s rise in European football
Diaz made a name for himself while playing for FC Porto. On the back of his impressive rise in Portugal, the Colombian international ended up joining Liverpool at the start of 2022. He only went from strength to strength while playing for the Reds.
During his five-year stint at the Merseyside club, the Colombian winger was involved in 148 matches, and he ended up contributing towards 64 goals. While he wasn’t a guaranteed starter under Arne Slot, the 29-year-old was certainly a key figure in the team.
He played a big part in their Premier League triumph and finished with 17 goals and eight assists in his 50 outings. Despite being an integral part of their plans, Diaz jumped on the opportunity to join Bayern during the last summer transfer window.
The decision to join Bayern Munich
As soon as the German giants knocked on his door, the Colombian winger had decided to make the switch. Having watched the club do wonders in Europe, he saw this as a great opportunity to once again test himself at the highest level in a different league.
Given how things have panned out so far, Diaz feels it was the right decision to make the switch. He feels a new challenge has helped drive him. Not only is he pleased with the move, but his family also seems to be loving him in Munich.
Learning the language has been the biggest challenge for the 29-year-old. But apart from that, he is certainly having the time of his life at the German club. Bayern have placed a lot of trust in him, and Diaz is trying to repay it with his performances on the pitch.
