Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has signed a new long-term contract with the Reds, as confirmed on the club’s official website. The 19-year-old, who arrived at Anfield from Charlton Athletic in 2015, signed a new deal with Jurgen Klopp’s side which will come into effect on July 1st.

Gomez has only made 2 appearances for the Reds this season after a lengthy 15-month spell on the sidelines due to injuries. Gomez missed a large part of last year’s campaign after suffering a cruciate ligament injury and has been sidelined with Achilles tendon problems this season.

However, the defender is clearly still highly rated at the club given the confidence placed in him with this new contract. Twitter was abuzz with the news and Gomez himself was particularly pleased with the show of faith.

Twitter being Twitter, there was some negativity as well.
