Kevin Campbell believes Raphinha would be a good signing for Liverpool, although he pointed out a major issue with the Brazilian joining the Reds.
Raphinha has been a revelation ever since he joined Leeds United in the summer of 2020. With plenty to show for his cause, the Brazilian has become a key part of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans over the past year and continues to grow in his role at the Yorkshire club.
In the absence of key attackers this season, the Brazilian winger was given more responsibilities in attack, and so far, there are no complaints about his contributions. His performances have generated links to various clubs, with Raphinha being tipped to join Liverpool at some stage.
As Jurgen Klopp continues to look for a wide attacker to add to his squad, stories have emerged regarding a move for some wingers, with Raphinha topping the list. The Liverpool manager wants to add a player for the long-term future, considering the fates of Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah remain in doubt.
It is understood that Raphinha might jump at the chance of joining Liverpool; but, the question over his playing time has cropped up. Even if he moves to Anfield, there is no way the Brazilian will dislodge the likes of Salah, Sadio Mane or even Diogo Jota on their current form.
Kevin Campbell spoke about the same problem to Football Insider. The former striker would love to see Raphinha at Liverpool. However, he does not want the Brazilian to be reduced to just an impact substitute under Jurgen Klopp and fears the attacker might play a backup role.
Campbell said, “I’m sure he won’t want to go anywhere as an impact sub,” he told Football Insider, before continuing, “Liverpool is a massive draw for him; of course, it is. But, he is playing every week at Leeds. That is always the problem when you are a club like Liverpool.”
“It’s hard to keep all of these players happy if they are not playing regularly. They’ve got four players at the top end of the pitch now. They are all top-quality as well. Where does Raphinha fit in? It is a tough one. Klopp wants to have a strong squad and Raphinha would certainly strengthen it. I just struggle to see where he fits in.”
Raphinha will undoubtedly be a quality addition to the Liverpool first-team squad. However, Campbell is not wrong in his assessment when he says that he will probably be an impact substitute at best at Anfield. So, it will be interesting to see if Raphinha is open to such a move and instead opts to stay put at Leeds United.
