Joe Gomez has voiced his delight after captaining Liverpool in the Carabao Cup victory over Norwich City.
Speaking to the press after the game against Norwich City, Joe Gomez sounded ecstatic after captaining the Liverpool first-team in midweek. The defender has praised all the players around him and the club for giving him the glorious opportunity.
A Liverpool player since 2015, Gomez was asked to lead the Liverpool team during the Carabao Cup fixture on Tuesday. The Reds won the game comfortably, securing a 3-0 victory, with Divock Origi finding the back of the net while Takumi Minamino bagged a brace.
Gomez, in particular, has received a lot of praise from the fans for his leadership in defence, playing alongside Ibrahima Konate and helping the Merseyside giants secure a clean sheet.
The defender himself has now voiced his delight of captaining Liverpool for the first time this midweek. As quoted by Transfer Market Web, the 24-year-old said, “It was a massive honour. Obviously, after the period I’ve had, the different injuries and coming back, I’m relishing every minute and on top of that, to be able to captain the side was unbelievable. I really enjoyed it.”
Since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015, Joe Gomez has featured in 124 competitive matches for Liverpool, emerging as a vital cog in defence in recent years. His contributions at the back alongside Virgil van Dijk have been essential in helping the club win the Champions League and Premier League in recent years.
“You’re responsible to try to lead as best you can. Everyone does that in different ways. I knew you don’t want to do anything over the top or out of the ordinary, you want to be yourself. The boys, everyone is unbelievable so there’s not much you need to say; it’s just about trying to be confident and give as much encouragement as possible,” said Gomez in the post-match presser.
“That desire, just try to apply it every day in the gym and on the training pitch. That’s all I can do. I know I’m at a top team with unbelievable players around me and part of that is just trying to play your part to push them.”
“Aside from that, it’s just patience. I’m enjoying being part of it and being fit. I’m at a great facility with great people, a great club. I’ve got to enjoy that and just be ready for when the time comes,” he added.
Jurgen Klopp’s decision to captain Joe Gomez is certainly indicative of his role in the Liverpool side and indeed in the future when the Reds will have to move on from the likes of Joel Matip and van Dijk. There have been already some criticism coming from former striker Michael Owen regarding the ageing nature of the first-team and Gomez, to that end, serves as an ideal prospect for the future.
