Joan Laporta speaks out on Barcelona’s Spotify deal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has opened up on the sponsorship deal with Spotify, calling it the biggest agreement in the club’s history.

Addressing the club stakeholders (h/t FC Barcelona official website), Barcelona president Joan Laporta spoke about the sponsorship deal that the club had agreed with Spotify, terming it the biggest agreement in the history of the Catalan giants.

Barcelona recently struck a deal with the Swedish music streaming giants, which will see Spotify’s name appear on the shirts of the men’s and women’s first team, while the company will also get the naming rights of Camp Nou for a period of 12 years.

While the deal was agreed upon last month, it was yet to be ratified by the club’s stakeholders, which was finally done in the forum which took place on Sunday. And it was during this meeting, that Laporta hailed the importance of the deal, terming it the biggest in the history of the club.

“Due to a confidentiality clause, applicable in all of Spotify’s global agreement, we cannot give exact figures but what we can say is that its is the best jersey and stadium agreement in financial terms that FC Barcelona has received,” said Laporta. “They have understood what Barça means and why we are ‘More than a Club’ as we like to describe ourselves,” added the president.

Stressing the deal’s importance for the Blaugrana, Laporta said, “It surpasses in regard to financial figures any previous sponsorship agreement Barça has had in its history and is one of the best in global sport.”

While the president did not divulge the financial aspects of the deal, it is believed that Spotify will be shelling out a sum of €280 million over four years. As part of the deal, the music streaming giants will sponsor the main shirts for four seasons and the training gear for three years starting from the 2022/23 campaign.

As for the stadium naming rights, a long-term agreement is in place, with Barcelona’s home turf now set to be called Spotify Camp Nou from next term for twelve years, during which the planned redevelopment of the stadium under the Espai Barça project will be carried out.
