Jack Wilshere has indicated he could hold talks with Arsenal to discuss a possible deal after Mikel Arteta’s comments last week.
Jack Wilshere was a rising star, destined for greatness at the start of the last decade. Having made his Arsenal debut as a 16-year-old, the diminutive midfielder became a key part of Arsene Wenger’s team. His performances in the Champions League win over Barcelona more or less cemented his status as a rising star.
He was awarded Arsenal’s Player of the Season and PFA Young Player of the Year gongs that term as things started to look bright. An England call up arrived, and slowly, Wilshere began to look like the future of the national side, only for injury problems to begin.
A free transfer to West Ham failed to work as injury problems continued, which led to the Hammers cancelling his deal two years into a three-year contract. He moved to Bournemouth on a short term deal and performed well. Despite him being relatively injury-free at the Vitality Stadium, the Cherries decided against a renewal.
Wilshere has claimed he’s injury-free since January of 2020 in an interview with David Ornstein of The Athletic and remains without a club. He’s been training with some sides, including Serie B side Calcio Como to maintain his fitness; however, no offers arrived from any club during the summer.
After his interview with Ornstein, Mikel Arteta was asked about Wilshere in a press conference in the build-up to Arsenal’s clash with Norwich last week. The Gunners’ manager said the club’s doors were open to their former star, opening up new possibilities for Wilshere.
Wilshere spoke to Sky Sports regarding various topics, including mental health and a potential return with Arsenal. The midfielder wants to keep every option open and has taken Arteta’s comments from last week in all its seriousness.
Wilshere said, “To hear the manager – who I played with, who I had a good relationship with, I really enjoyed playing with him, sharing the dressing room with him – to hear him come out and say the door is always open is nice.”
“It can only help me. Being around good players, training with world-class players and as well just being in a team environment is something I’m interested in. I’m sure that I’ll have a conversation with someone at the club over the next couple of days.”
After Arteta’s comments, a return may become a reality as Wilshere surely seems keen on a potential offer. However, it remains to be seen if he signs up to play for the first team or just to keep himself fit. In any case, if he impresses Arteta in training, the dream of donning the Arsenal shirt could yet become a reality.
