Arsenal dropped Aaron Ramsdale against Everton on Sunday, and Mikel Arteta chose to use summer signing David Raya instead.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has suggested that 25-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is likely to start against PSV Eindhoven despite being dropped against Everton.
While appearing on a penal for the Premier League, Wright claimed that Ramsdale will be given his opportunity in the midweek, and it remains to be seen whether he can grab it with both hands.
“This is the time to start changing. It wasn’t going to be long before we saw David Raya. I think it’s not a bad thing,” Wright said before continuing, “You want two top players in each position, that’s how you keep the players wanting to play at their very best all the time, and I think it’s time for him to get his chance. It says to me that Ramsdale probably plays on Wednesday (v PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League).”
The 25-year-old had an impressive campaign with Arsenal last season, and he helped them challenge for the league title. He was undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in the league, but the Gunners decided to invest in a new goalkeeper, and speculations are rife that Raya could stake his claim as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Ramsdale will certainly be disappointed with the situation but the 25-year-old has shown his quality in the Premier League and he should look to push for the starting spot by impressing with his performances whenever he gets an opportunity.
Meanwhile, Raya was outstanding for Brentford last season, and the 27-year-old Spanish goalkeeper is an exceptional signing as well. Both goalkeepers are excellent shot-stoppers. But Raya is certainly more accomplished as a passer, and his distribution from the deep could add a new dimension to the Arsenal play.
It remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta is ready to drop Ramsdale in the coming weeks as well. The 25-year-old is at the stage of his career where he needs to play every week, and he will not want to be an understudy to the summer signing.
