Gary Neville slams Manchester United following latest setback

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has not held back in a candid assessment of the club’s current standing in English football.

Speaking on his podcast (h/t Tribal Football), Manchester United legend Gary Neville has slammed the current Red Devils side for their fall from grace in recent years.

The Red Devils remain one of the biggest teams in English and world football, but their fortunes on the field have taken a bad beating. Liverpool and Manchester City are today the two most dominant sides in the country and possibly the continent and are miles ahead of Manchester United at this moment in time.

Neville, usually vocal on Manchester United’s performances, had little to say regarding the team’s fortunes. Following the abject loss to Everton last week, the Red Devils continued to lose ground in the race for a top-four finish.

Poor performances have become the norm in recent weeks, and Neville did not appear optimistic about it changing anytime soon. He added that the team is so bad that they will probably take manager Ralf Rangnick down with them. Given the minimal impact the German has had, one cannot counter that point.

“No anger, no comment anymore. They are a bit of a farce; you almost expect it from them. The players are taking Ralf Rangnick down with them. They are bad.”

It will have pained Neville to admit that in terms of ability and attitude, both Liverpool and Manchester City are on a different dimension. They function as a team and do not let individual egos come in the way of their ambitions.

“There isn’t one Manchester United player that would get into any of those two teams, so why would you have an over-inflated ego, think you didn’t have to work hard, or be spiritless? I don’t see anything anymore,” he said.

As things stand, Neville’s opinion is spot-on and presents a bleak picture of the situation at the once-mighty club. Manchester United are today akin to a ship without a rudder, and a wholesale revamp has to take place for them to regain their footing in the footballing pyramid.

While Erik ten Hag is potentially an excellent choice to rebuild the side, it will matter for little unless he is given the time, resources and freedom to imbibe his vision onto the playing squad. Unless changes are made from top to bottom, there is every chance that the Red Devils will continue to sink deeper into the quagmire of football irrelevancy.
