Robert Huth has backed Gareth Southgate for the Manchester United job, although he’s unsure if the club needs him.
There are many implications to Manchester United’s indifferent season so far. One corner wants answers for their strange results on the pitch, but others see it differently and still back the club to achieve success.
One way or another, Erik ten Hag’s future has come under scrutiny, especially in light of some of their results and performances. Manchester United are currently well off the top-four race while also getting eliminated from the Champions League and Europe altogether.
Yet, the new part owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is in no rush to dismiss Ten Hag as the Dutchman’s future remains secure for the time being. There have been many suggestions in the media in light of the British Billionaire purchasing a 25% stake in the club, as those stories more or less guaranteed Ten Hag’sHag’s dismissal.
Julen Lopetegui’s name has come under consideration, with the former Wolves boss currently out of work since leaving his position at Molineux at the start of the season. Graham Potter also gets a mention, but in truth, Manchester United may not have consider parting ways with Ten Hag.
Now, a new name has come into the reckoning, with former Leicester City defender and Premier League winner Robert Huth backing 53-year-old Gareth Southgate. His comments appeared on the Manchester Evening News, as he insisted the England boss could do a job at Old Trafford but remained unsure whether the club even considered him as an option.
Huth said, “It massively depends on his workload; when you’re an international manager, you’re not on the pitch every day and working quite as intimately with the players because you get a limited period of time with the players each break.”
“If he does go back in that could be a massive shock to the system. Sometimes you need to be harsh and say it as it is.”
“I don’t know if that is what Manchester United needs because I just don’t know where they are at the moment. They’ve had successful managers in the past, but they haven’t worked out for whatever reason either. It is a difficult one to work out, but I am sure Gareth would go for it if the situation were to arise. Not many managers turn down Manchester United, that is for sure.”
Gareth Southgate has done an admirable job for England so far, managing them to a good place in three big tournaments. He also took them to the Euro final last time out but narrowly missed on the nation’s first big trophy in a long while.
There are doubts whether Southgate has any interest in assuming a club role currently, but he may assess his options once he leaves the England role, whenever that may come. Whether Manchester United fans will accept the 53-year-old taking over at their club remains the question, but the world has yet to see Southgate managing a high-profile club.
