Mick Brown insists that Eddie Howe will be tempted by the prospect of taking over at Manchester United if they sack Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag’s future remains one of the biggest media topics before and after the international break. The decent win over Brentford at the weekend did not change the narrative in the slightest, as the media rumblings are all about who the successor could be.
Reports again thrust Zinedine Zidane’s name into the frame while others, like Graham Potter, are in the frame. Some managers, like Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate, are no longer in the market, following the former’s decision to take the England job, while the latter wants to stay away from football management for the time being.
Reports also mentioned Eddie Howe, with suggestions that the Newcastle man would consider a move to Old Trafford. Relations between the two clubs are not considered cordial following the saga involving director Dan Ashworth in the summer, although that may have no effect on negotiations for Howe.
Newcastle United will reportedly push to block any approach from Manchester United for their manager, as they are not keen to part ways anytime soon. However, former Manchester United chief scout and assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that Howe will be tempted by the chance to manage at Old Trafford.
Brown said, “I’ve heard he’d be tempted by the opportunity.”
“No matter the situation the club finds itself in, anybody would be temped by that offer.
“There are major problems which need overhauling, but it’s a great place to be and it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
“Howe, I believe, would back himself to sort out some of those problems, and that would get the crowd on his side. He’s got a very good reputation. I’ve never worked with him personally but I’ve heard nothing but good things about him and his management.”
“I don’t think there are that many candidates in the frame for the job now.”
“If Ten Hag was sacked tomorrow, where would they go next? That’s why the owners haven’t pulled the trigger, and that’s why Howe’s name is on their list. They obviously feel that if they pull the trigger, he would consider taking over.”
Howe would be a fantastic option, although signing him would be difficult. England were interested in bringing him on board before baulking at Newcastle’s financial demands to let him leave. Manchester United might face the same problems, although there’s always the factor of being lured to a club of their size.
The other big problem for Manchester United would be Ten Hag’s compensation should he be sacked. A report stated that the Red Devils might have to pay £17 million in compensation for the Dutchman, which, added to Newcastle United’s potential demand for Howe, would make appointing a new manager an expensive affair.
