Barcelona star Ferran Torres reveals Real Madrid tried to sign him in the past

Barcelona forward Ferran Torres has revealed that La Liga champions Real Madrid tried to sign him on more than one occasion in the past.

Speaking in an interview with COPE’s El Partidazo (h/t MARCA), Barcelona and Spain forward Ferran Torres has admitted that he had multiple opportunities to sign for Real Madrid in the past but snubbed the La Liga and European champions.

Torres, a product of the Valencia youth setup, joined Barcelona in January earlier this year after an 18-month stint with Manchester City. The 22-year-old has made a decent start to life at Camp Nou and finished his debut campaign with the Catalans with a tally of six goals and assists apiece from 25 matches in all competitions.

Torres has been seen as a prodigious talent throughout his career and has shown plenty of promise at every club he has been at. Naturally, there had been a lot of interest in his services during his early days at Valencia. The versatile forward has now admitted that Real Madrid made multiple attempts to sign him, only for him to snub them at every opportunity.

Talking about the advances from  Los Blancos, Torres said, “When I was young I had several opportunities to sign for Real Madrid, but we saw that it wasn’t the right time. At one time I was at the World Cup and I went up to the Valencia first team and I think it went well. The others were when I was a kid and you give more importance to being closer to home.”

During the interview, Torres also spoke about his season with Barcelona and the criticism he has had to face due to his poor finishing on occasions. “It has been a difficult year because I had to leave [Manchester City], I had a serious injury and I arrived at Barcelona with a lot of hope,” Ferran said.

“I knew where I was coming from, that the club was in a complicated period and that we had to do our best to qualify for the Champions League because otherwise it would have been a failure, and we achieved our objective. Now we have to think about next season and try to win titles,” he added.

Speaking of his lack of goals, he added, “I was very calm. I’m a winger, not a striker, but I have the ability to score and when I can I also have to give assists. I’m proud that I’ve given the team more beyond scoring goals. I’m an ambitious player and when I fail I want to learn. I don’t eat my head off because you can finish badly, I look back at things so I can improve.”
