The Mestalla staged one of the most exciting La Liga matches in recent memory. The 5-goal thriller included goals from Messi, Suarez and Munir, an injury to Iniesta, and bottles being thrown at Neymar by the home fans.
It started off in the worst possible way for the visitors, with captain Andres Iniesta suffering an injury early on, because of which he had to be stretchered off the pitch. The knee injury, as it was later revealed, could keep him out for months.

I don’t care about this game anymore, just tell me Iniesta is okay.

Awful to see Iniesta injured. Let’s hope it’s not serious. Nice reaction from home fans to chant his name as he was stretchered off…
— Ben Hayward (@bghayward) October 22, 2016
Replay showing Enzo Perez tackle on Iniesta which hurt his knee was not as bad as first seemed. More the impact than deliberate foul

Iniesta out injured 12 minutes in. Lucho furious on touchline, as he should. It seems Valencia players are out there to wrestle…

Mere minutes later, Lionel Messi gave Barcelona the lead with a sublime finish.

Barcelona have not looked convincing at all but Messi’s brilliance is looking like it will be the main difference here.

Munir El-Haddidi, currently on loan at Valencia from Barcelona, brought his side back on level terms against his parent club, but refused to celebrate.
And as if Paco Alcácer wasn’t suffering enough, the man he was bought as a supposed upgrade for, Munir El Haddadi, levels with a fine goal.
— Ben Hayward (@bghayward) October 22, 2016
Munir El Haddadi is asking questions. He loves himself some golazo against his former side. #VALFCB
— Wejul! (@wejuliard) October 22, 2016
We were winning until Munir came on ?

Outstanding hit from the lad Munir, never hit a ball so sweetly in his life. Doesn’t celebrate.

Munir goal.
But he isn’t good enough for us. Sure.

Barcelona barely had any time to recover from that goal when Rodrigo put the home side in front in the 56th minute, to send the Mestalla into a frenzy!

But the champions weren’t going to go down so easily, with Golden Shoe winner Luis Suarez equalising for his side minutes later.

SUAREZ!!!! Valencia 2, Barcelona 2. Miracle from Diego Alves and then absolutely vicious finish. What a game this.
— Gabriele Marcotti (@Marcotti) October 22, 2016
Then as it seemed as if Valencia had salvaged a brilliant point from this game, a bit of magic from Messi and a moment of madness from Aymen Abdennour helped Luis Suarez win a penalty in the 93rd minute.
WOW!!!! With the game over time wise, Messi produces a moment of magic, Suarez hacked down. Big penalty! 2-2 at The Mestalla! Messi to take!
— Kevin Egan (@kev_egan) October 22, 2016
Abdenoor came in and was having a great game, then gives up a penalty to Luis Suarez ?

— Josip (@jperkovic93) October 22, 2016
This is probably the biggest motivator for Messi, the one thing he’s not the best at, and he overcame it when it mattered. That’s important.

The 5-goal thriller was marred by controversy as Valencia fans hurled projectiles onto the Barcelona players celebrating in front of them, with Luis Suarez and Neymar seeming to bear the brunt of the angry home fans.
