Kevin Campbell believes Arsenal should try and sign Manchester United’s beleaguered star Donny van de Beek who reportedly wants an exit.
When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to bring on Donny van de Beek against Manchester City, a section of the audience made their pleasure known with a rapturous welcome for the Dutchman. It was not an indication of a game-changing substitution, but seeing the midfielder get game time certainly made the section a happy bunch.
Such has been van de Beek’s plight at Manchester United for nearly 18 months since he moved from Ajax. Solskjaer barely trusts the midfielder, and despite the team’s bad performances in recent times, there is no regular game time or even a chance to compete insight for the Dutchman.
He reportedly remains keen to leave the club, with many pundits understandably urging the Dutchman to leave Manchester United at the earliest opportunity and resurrect his career elsewhere.
There would not be a shortage of offers if Manchester United decided to let him go. While Premier League sides have maintained an interest, Newcastle have reportedly made their intentions clear for a January swoop.
The idea might be to stick around the Premier League despite interest from Italy and Spain as things stand. However, Manchester United will be wary of selling or loaning the midfielder to another league rival, such as Arsenal or Everton.
Kevin Campbell feels van de Beek could be a good signing for Arsenal, who might be interested considering they might need a midfielder in January. The former Arsenal striker told the Dutchman’s versatile style will let him play in any position. His comments in an interview with Highbury Squad appeared on the Manchester Evening News.
Campbell said, “There’s been a rumour about van de Beek at Manchester United. It’s not his fault, how is it his fault? He was at Ajax; he was unbelievable at Ajax. He gets signed by Manchester United, and they won’t play him. I don’t know; I’m just saying it’s a rumour. I only want what’s best for Arsenal, and I believe that Van de Beek can play if given the opportunity. The boy can play.”
“He wants out. You never know, maybe they might [loan him to Arsenal]. At the end of the day, what’s the point of having an unhappy player, and obviously, Ole doesn’t fancy him. I think this young man has got super ability, has got a great attitude, but he needs to play.”
“He can play anywhere around that midfield, he can play holding, eight and attacking. So again, we’ve got someone who’s versatile,” he added, suggesting that his tactical versatility could be useful for Mikel Arteta during the second half of the campaign.
