Antonio Conte opines on Tottenham’s “unacceptable” run

Antonio Conte called on the Tottenham board to assess the current situation, hinting at making a future call in the aftermath of their defeat to Burnley.

Tottenham were dealt a severe blow to their top-four chances after their shock defeat to Burnley in the Premier League on Wednesday night. The loss came after a terrific win over Manchester City at the weekend.

Momentum was on their side from the result at the Etihad but they never looked like winning against the Clarets. Ben Mee’s solitary second-half goal was enough to beat Spurs, who suffered their fourth defeat in five league games.

Antonio Conte, who has been critical about Tottenham’s transfer dealings in January, was not pleased with the direction in which the club are heading and called on the board to discuss the next steps.

Conte told Sky Sports, “It was a difficult night. It’s not only tonight; in the last five games we lost four games. It means there will be [an] assessment about the club, about me, because I think for me it is very frustrating to lose four out of five. For sure, the situation speaks clear. I am really sorry for the fans; I am really sorry because I think they don’t deserve this.”

“When you lose four out of five, it means the club has to make an assessment, speak together, and understand which is the best solution. In this situation, the players are always the same in this club, the club change coaches, but the players are the same, but the result doesn’t change,” the Italian added.

Conte then asked the club to assess the entire situation, including his own future in north London. He remained open to helping Tottenham out of their peril, although hinted at quitting amid some frustrating time in recent weeks.

He continued, “On Saturday, we play another game [Leeds at Elland Road], it’s the moment to see the situation and make an assessment, really frustrated, not used to seeing these situations. I’m trying to do everything, but the situation is not changing. In this moment, it is not important to speak about mistakes or other situations. The reality is we lost four out of the last five.

“With this situation, we would have to fight for the relegation zone if we continue this way. I repeat, it would be important for everybody to understand the situation, because for sure you have to make assessment of the club first of all, and I repeat I am available to the club for every decision. I repeat, I come here to help the club, but in this moment it is very difficult, because I am not helping the club, and for me it’s a very, very frustrating situation.”

Conte signed an 18-month contract with Tottenham when he replaced Nuno Espirito Santo earlier this season. However, with the club not backing him in January and things not going well on the south, a parting of ways may come sooner than the duration of his deal.
