Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has now opened up on the Merseyside club’s recent links with Giorgi Mamardashvili.
In an interview with Paul Joyce of The Times, 31-year-old Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has revealed that he is well aware of the Merseyside club’s pursuit to sign 23-year-old Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from La Liga club Valencia.
Alisson also confirmed that he plans to continue at Liverpool despite links with Saudi Arabian clubs. He revealed that he has a contract with the Premier League club and that he does not intend to leave anytime soon.
The veteran goalkeeper revealed that he was aware of the club’s interest in Mamardashvili before the links surfaced on social media. Apparently Liverpool kept him in the loop regarding a move for the Valencia goalkeeper. Alisson believes that the club is preparing for the future. But he is very much the focal point of their plans for now, and he is very happy at the club along with his family.
“The club needs to prepare for the future,” he said. “We are not going to last forever here, I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club and I want to give to the club as much as I can. They will do it for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves for the future.”
“I think it was a good idea. I knew about that [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think. They are doing the right thing but, on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, [so] I will stay.”
Alisson remains the first-choice at Liverpool
It is clear that the Brazilian will continue to be the first-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool for now, and the Georgian international will be his long term replacement. Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, and he needs to leave to play regularly. It seems that Mamardashvili could be the backup option to Alisson for now.
The 23-year-old La Liga goalkeeper will want to play often this season, and it will be interesting to see how Liverpool manage his game time. There have been rumours of a potential loan move as well, and it remains to be seen now the situation unfolds.
