Tottenham Hotspur are currently staring at the possibility of appointing a mid-season replacement for manager Antonio Conte.

Antonio Conte’s recent outburst after the draw against Southampton has fuelled rumours that Tottenham could look to sack him during the international break and bring in a new manager soon, with Mauricio Pochettino among the options.

The Londoners have been linked with a move for former manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine tactician is currently without a job, and he could prove to be an impressive acquisition at Tottenham.

The 51-year-old is not the only manager linked with the Tottenham job. And the north Londoners are reportedly keeping tabs on the likes of Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel, and Luis Enrique, among others.

Here at The Hard Tackle, we look at three reasons why Mauricio Pochettino would be the best possible replacement for Antonio Conte and Tottenham should look to bring him back to the club in the coming months.

Tactical familiarity and suitability with the squad

Most of the key Tottenham players would be a good fit for Pochettino’s style of play. And the Argentine tactician could get the best out of underperforming players like Son Heung-min and Richarlison.

Antonio Conte’s passive approach seems to have sucked the joy out of players like Son and Richarlison, who are more suited to a high-intensity, pressing football. Son, in particular, was exceptional under Pochettino. And the 51-year-old’s return could hand the South Korean a new lease of life.

Given the attacking quality at their disposal, Tottenham are better suited to Pochettino’s style of football. Furthermore, the fact that a number of key players are well-versed in the Argentine manager’s approach means the Londoners would not need a major rebuild in order to implement his system at the club.

Ability to operate within means

Pochettino has managed Tottenham in the past and he helped them challenge for the Premier League title and the Champions League titles on a shoestring budget. He is aware of the financial limitations at the club and has the experience of operating with limited resources from his time at Espanyol and Southampton.

Pochettino’s teams tend to punch above their weight, and Tottenham are clearly in need of someone like that. It is abundantly clear that Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy are not going to bankroll a number of marquee signings anytime soon. So bringing in managers like Conte, who like to revamp the side with a plethora of new signings was a poor idea, to begin with.

Pochettino is reportedly keen on returning to Tottenham, and that suggests he is willing to operate within the structure at the club. He is unlikely to demand unreasonable funding. In addition, he has a strong relationship with Levy as well. As for Conte, he was never really content with the lack of transfers at the club ever since he arrived.

Lifeline for outcasts

The return of Pochettino could be a boon for players like Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele. The two players are currently on loan in Italy and they are set to return to their parent clubs in the summer.

Clearly, Antonio Conte did not fancy the two midfielders, and they were expected to be sold in the summer. However, Pochettino could hand them another chance to prove their worth at the club. Winks was an important squad player for Pochettino during his time at the club and the Argentine convinced Daniel Levy to spend the big bucks on Ndombele.

The Frenchman even admitted that he joined Spurs because of Pochettino, who is one of the best managers around. Spurs need some creativity in their midfield and if Pochettino can get the best out of Winks and Ndombele, it would save them millions in the transfer market.
