Liverpool have had a dismal Premier League campaign so far and Jurgen Klopp’s side finds themselves tenth in the league table.

The Reds came close to winning the quadruple last season and few would have expected them to regress the way they have this season.

It Is quite clear that Klopp has a major rebuild ahead of him and Liverpool will have to spend significant sums of money in order to revitalise the squad and transform them into title contenders once again.

The Reds’ rebuild must start with the departure of a number of players who are on the decline or have simply failed to prove their worth at a club like Liverpool.

Here are five players the Reds must look to cash in on during the summer transfer window.

Joe Gomez

The highly rated centre-back joined Liverpool from Charlton under Rafael Benitez and he was expected to develop into the mainstay of the Liverpool defence for years to come.

Gomez was undoubtedly one of the best young talents at the club before persistent injuries ruined his development as a player.

The 25-year-old has clearly lost a yard of pace given his recent injury problems and his confidence has dropped massively as well.

There is no doubt that Gomez has all the attributes to develop into a solid reliable Premier League defender, but he has clearly lost his way at Liverpool and he needs to leave the club for his own good.

Liverpool are overly dependent on Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk now and it is high time they invest in a centre-back. Cashing in on Gomez would be the right decision this summer.

While the same can be said of his partner Joel Matip, the former Schalke defender is unlikely to fetch a substantial amount of money and Liverpool could use an influx of cash in order to bring in their own signings.

Roberto Firmino

The Brazilian striker has been linked with a move away from Liverpool, especially with his contract winding down at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old has been a key player for the club since joining them from Hoffenheim and he has helped Liverpool win every single trophy at the club level.

Firmino has done reasonably well this season as well with 9 goals and 4 assists to his name across all competitions.

However, his early season form has been hampered by persistent injury problems and the Reds should look to cash in on him at the end of the season. If they fail to renew his contract, he will be able to move on as a free agent.

The player has been linked with clubs like Real Madrid in recent months and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.

Even if he moves on as a free agent, his wages are better invested elsewhere.

The Brazilian is simply not a reliable player anymore because of his injury issues and his consistency on the pitch is a matter of concern as well.

Fabinho

Another player who has been instrumental to Liverpool’s success in recent seasons.

Fabeen established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world following his move to Liverpool from Monaco but his form has fallen off a Cliff over the past year.

The 29-year-old Is clearly a shadow of his former self and Liverpool should look to cash in on him and bring in a more reliable defensive midfielder.

It seems that the Brazilian Is burnt out and Jurgen Klopp’s system requires legs which he cannot provide anymore. At 29, he is not going to get better either.

Curtis Jones

Jones was regarded as one of the most talented players to have come out of the Liverpool Academy when he was breaking through and he managed to impress initially with his performances for the first team.

However, his development has clearly stalled and he is nowhere near good enough to start for a club like Liverpool.

Furthermore, he has not been a regular starter for the Reds and he needs to leave the club for his own benefit.

Jones is good enough for most mid-table Premier League clubs and he should look to get his career back on track with a move away from Anfield at the end of the season.

As for Liverpool, they need to bring in quality central midfielders and the proceeds from Jones’s departure should boost their transfer coffers.

The 26-year-old centre-back has been a very useful player for Liverpool and he has managed to deliver every time he has been called upon.

However, he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career and he’s unlikely to get those opportunities at Liverpool. The Reds should look to cash in on him before his value plummets in the transfer market and invest the proceeds from his sale into a new centre-back.
