Jose Mourinho is committed to Benfica ahead of the future amid constant links with the likes of Newcastle United.
According to O Jogo, Jose Mourinho is reportedly committed to Benfica and is dreaming of bringing titles back to the Lisbon-based club. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss has seen links to Newcastle United amid speculation surrounding Eddie Howe, but at the moment, he is expected to remain at Benfica.
Jose Mourinho is no longer seen as one of the best managers in the world, as he was for a long period spanning 10–15 years. Having guided FC Porto to a Champions League title back in 2004, the Portuguese coach then went on to find success with Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
He also had stints at Manchester United, Tottenham and Fenerbahçe before returning to Portugal after more than 20 years away from his home country to manage Benfica. Mourinho signed a two-year deal, but both parties could terminate the contract in the summer by paying half the compensation owing to a clause in his deal.
There have been a few links about making a return to the Premier League at various points of the season, including Newcastle United, since November. Back then, pressure was mounting on Eddie Howe, but the Magpies did not consider parting ways with the Englishman in favour of appointing Mourinho as his replacement.
The Magpies are still not considering sacking Howe despite a dip in performances this season, as well as the manner of their exit from the Champions League. Next season’s participation in the competition looks difficult as things stand, but it appears Howe’s job is not dependent on Champions League football, meaning there is a chance he stays on beyond the current season.
Jose Mourinho committed to Benfica?
It appears to be the case that the 63-year-old Mourinho is not thinking about leaving the Lisbon-based side, as he is eager to bring titles to Benfica. Despite the contract not being long-term in nature, should the Portuguese boss win a title, perhaps next year, then there is a chance the club could even hand him a new deal.
At the moment, Benfica are third in the league, but they could still catch leaders and Mourinho’s former side, FC Porto. However, the idea is to keep building this team to an extent that they are capable of mounting a title challenge next season, as Mourinho is not looking at another stint in the Premier League.
