Niko Kovac is on the radars of Manchester United and Tottenham as the Premier League giants continue their pursuit of a new manager.
According to Bild, Niko Kovac is on the radar of Manchester United and Tottenham as a potential managerial candidate. The Croatian is currently managing Borussia Dortmund, and a move to the Premier League might appeal to him should he leave his current post.
Managerial talk is expected to be rife around the summer window as clubs like Manchester United and Tottenham have big decisions on their hands. Both Premier League giants are experiencing contrasting fortunes this season, with the former vying for a top-four place and the latter battling relegation.
Manchester United parted ways with Rúben Amorim before installing Michael Carrick in an interim role until the summer. Similarly, Spurs sacked Thomas Frank and went on to appoint Igor Tudor until the end of the season, with no plans in place to make the Croatian’s appointment permanent.
In fact, Spurs are contemplating bringing in another Croatian, as they are interested in Kovac as an option. The Borussia Dortmund boss may not be the priority target at this stage, with Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca considered the frontrunners to take over at the north London side.
Manchester United are also interested in Kovac as a potential option, although there are strong calls for Carrick to be retained and offered the permanent role following his terrific performances so far. However, should the club choose to go in a different direction, they might consider the 54-year-old Bundesliga manager as a potential candidate for the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Niko Kovac to leave Dortmund?
Dortmund are currently happy with Kovac after the 54-year-old guided them to second place in the Bundesliga standings. However, the manner of their exit from the Champions League against Atalanta has brought fresh scrutiny on the manager, which might become the main reason for his dismissal should the club choose to part ways.
A switch to Manchester United or Tottenham could be a good move for the Croatian, as the Premier League might offer a different kind of appeal. It remains to be seen how serious those clubs are about pursuing the 54-year-old, who could prove a strong choice given his wealth of experience in top-level football.
