Manchester United looking at Gareth Southgate as Ruben Amorim replacement

Manchester United still reluctant to offload Kobbie Mainoo, reasons revealed.

Manchester United are looking at former England manager Gareth Southgate as a replacement for Ruben Amorim.

Having parted ways with Ruben Amorim, Manchester United have already started looking for a potential candidate to take his place on their bench. According to a report from TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are keen on appointing Gareth Southgate as their next manager.

Amorim’s 14-month-long stint at Old Trafford came to an end on Monday following an emergency board meeting. Apart from the club’s poor performances on the pitch, the increasing tension between the manager and the club’s hierarchy and his recent comments played a massive part in his sacking.

With the Portuguese manager now gone, United have decided to hand Darren Fletcher the reins on an interim basis as they look for an ideal replacement. The Red Devils are interested in appointing Southgate as their next boss.

United want Southgate as their next boss

They were linked with the former England boss last year as well, when Amorim was under immense pressure. Now they have reignited their pursuit following the departure of Amorim. While Southgate doesn’t have a great track record managing clubs, he certainly did wonders for the Three Lions.

He led them in over 100 matches over the course of eight years and guided them to two UEFA Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final. He certainly transformed them from an underperforming team to serious contenders.

Since he has been without a job since leaving the England role in the summer of 2024, United won’t have to fork out a fee to secure his services. However, bringing him in will mean another major change in formation and tactics. Unlike Amorim, Southgate prefers playing with a back four. He is not as rigid with his system as the Portuguese manager, which will certainly help their cause.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe remains a massive admirer of Southgate, and Jason Wilcox also has huge respect for him, given what he has done at the international level. The duo would love to have him on their bench and have already started working towards it.
