Liverpool are in discussions with Michael Edwards over extending his deal and will present a long-term contract to continue his association with the club.

According to TBR, Liverpool are ready to keep hold of their influential chief Michael Edwards as discussions over a new deal are already underway. The club are of the view that they have the best backroom staff in World Football, with Edwards at the centre of the setup, as there’s confidence he will prolong his association with the Merseysiders.

There are two facets to Michael Edwards’ influence at Liverpool, which began during his first spell at the club, where he was the sporting director. During the period, he worked closely with Jurgen Klopp, with the manager delivering top-level success with Premier League and Champions League titles.

He was also instrumental in identifying Klopp’s successor once the German left, as the appointment of Arne Slot has been nothing short of a masterstroke. The Dutchman delivered the club’s 20th league title in his first season, with the club already in talks to extend his deal.

However, from an executive level, Fenway Sports Group firmly believes they have the best backroom staff in the whole of world football. Edwards is the CEO of Football for FSG and carries a broader role compared to the likes of Richard Hughes.

Hughes was also appointed under Edwards’ watch, and his overall structure has delivered on the promise. Meanwhile, Liverpool spent heavily in the summer, with the backroom staff playing an influential role in luring top targets like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz during the window.

FSG are discussing Michael Edwards’ contract

While the Slot talks are underway, there are also discussions with Edwards to extend his deal. The duo, alongside Hughes, have running contracts until 2027, with the club positively moving in the direction of extending their stay.

With a new deal, Edwards is likely to have a broader role, with Liverpool steadily moving into the Multi Club Model, and he will be instrumental in this transition. Hence, the Liverpool fans as well as the FSG hierarchy will hope for a swift conclusion on Edwards’ new contract, as well as that for Slot and Hughes.
