Erik ten Hag’s assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy could take over as Manchester United’s manager as the pressure builds on the former Ajax boss.

According to Valentijn Driessen via VoetbalPrimeur, Ruud van Nistelrooy could be promoted to the new Manchester United manager if the board decided to sack the Dutch manager following a poor start to the new season.

Erik ten Hag’s uncertain future at United

Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford wasn’t certain at the end of the 2023/24 season. Thanks to their FA Cup win, the board decided to stick with him and they even handed him a new deal.

They backed him during the recently concluded transfer window and once again spent a fortune on player transfers. Despite giving Ten Hag everything he wanted, the United ownership is not pleased with the poor start to the new season.

The Red Devils have lost three out of their six league outings and they failed to get the better of FC Twente in their Europa League opener. They were hammered 3-0 at the hands of Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday and it didn’t help Ten Hag’s cause.

The former Ajax boss is under pressure but a report from Football Insider suggests that United will not be making a snap decision about their manager’s future. Despite the poor result, they will stick with him for now.

But, if results do not go their way in the coming weeks, the Manchester-based club won’t have too many options apart from showing Ten Hag the exit door.

Ruud van Nistelrooy open to be United’s next manager

Is Valentijn Driessen is to be believed, Ruud van Nistelrooy could take over as the new manager of the club if they do sack the 54-year-old. The former United striker would be open to the role.

The Dutch journalist said: “I think Van Nistelrooy would be open to it. And in itself that could happen, because of course the dream candidate is not there. Van Nistelrooy comes from the club, and is already well regarded by the players. Someone who has played at the top, also at United himself.”

Van Nistelrooy made a return to his former club in the summer. He was brought in to help Ten Hag and with things not going according to plan, the 48-year-old could become their next boss. United do not have a dream candidate lined up and with the former Dutch striker well aware of how things work at the club, it won’t be a surprise if he is handed a promotion.
