Jurgen Klopp will ring in the changes when Liverpool and Southampton clash in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday.
Liverpool have a number of injury issues heading into the FA Cup fifth-round clash against Southampton on Wednesday. So, they will have to grind out a positive result here to reach the quarter-finals.
The Reds are likely to field a heavily-rotated site after the weekend’s final against Chelsea. Liverpool picked up a 1-0 win in the Carabao Cup final after extra time and most of their players will be fatigued after playing 120 minutes.
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch picked up a ligament injury during the EFL Cup final, and he is set to miss out. Wataru Endo picked up a knock as well, and he is unlikely to feature here. In addition, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez are touch-and-go for the game.
Apart from that, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Stefan Bajcetic, Alisson Becker, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Joel Matip are all long-term absentees and unavailable. So, Klopp has the incentive to rotate his side on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Liverpool manager said on Gravenberch, “We have a couple of niggles at least. Ryan is obviously worse. Ryan is not able to play. He’s not running around, [he is] walking around on crutches. It’s not as bad as it could have been but he’s definitely out for tomorrow and for the weekend.”
Klopp continued on the rest of the team news update, “Wataru obviously wasn’t great after the game – it’s not serious, we have to see. That’s how it is with all the other boys. We don’t want to play with that, we just have to have to do it like that.”
“We have to wait each minute pretty much – if they feel different, stuff like this – and then we still have to make sure that we don’t take too much risk. It will be a much-changed team – there’s no chance for anything else. But the players who featured on Sunday and are able to go again will be involved again. Easy as that.”
Caoimhin Kelleher is set to start in goal for Liverpool against Southampton, with the Reds shaping up in a 4-3-3 formation. Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas will be deployed as the full-backs, while Jarell Quansah will start at the heart of the defence alongside Joe Gomez.
The midfield is likely to be heavily rotated as well, with James McConnell, Bobby Clark and Trey Nyoni likely to start. Jayden Danns was given an opportunity against Chelsea on Sunday, and he is likely to lead the line for Liverpool. Kaide Gordon and Lewis Koumas should start alongside him in the wide areas.
Predicted Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Bradley, Quansah, Gomez, Tsimikas; Clark, McConnell, Nyoni; Gordon, Danns, Koumas
