Sven Mislintat is a candidate to become Liverpool’s new sporting director and succeed Julian Ward next summer.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool could approach former Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal executive Sven Mislintat to become their next sporting director. The German is a candidate to succeed Julian Ward in the role, when he leaves the club after the current season.
Liverpool have stabilised as a club since Jurgen Klopp took over as the manager, shoring up many other backroom positions. The idea was to build a strong foundation and develop policies that helped the Merseysiders in the long term.
The Reds have consistently competed for major honours during this period, winning the UEFA Champions League and Premier League titles. While Klopp takes much of the plaudits, others, such as Michael Edwards, deserve plenty of credit.
Edwards relinquished his role at the start of the current season and took a sabbatical. The former executive is a target for some of the league’s top clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United. After he left the club, his second in command, Julian Ward, took over the reins.
Excl. News #Mislintat: He is a candidate in order to replace Ward as a Sporting Director at #LFC in summer 2023! No concrete negotiations yet but he‘s open for Liverpool. Relation to Klopp still brilliant. They have worked together in Dortmund (08-15). @Sky_Marc @SkySportDE 🇩🇪 pic.twitter.com/ZZ1bXAY5tr

Ward has done a decent job since becoming the sporting director, but his contributions under Edwards have not gone unnoticed. However, Ward’s career in this particular role will be short following the confirmation of his departure when the season ends.
Liverpool are not forcing the issue and want to replace Ward with someone with the know-how of the role. There are many viable candidates; former Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal executive Sven Mislintat has caught Liverpool’s attention.
It is understood that Mislintat is keen on becoming Liverpool’s next sporting director. He left his role as VfB Stuttgart’s sporting director on Wednesday after three years in the position.
Mislintat has previously worked with Klopp at Dortmund between 2008 and 2015. He understands the Liverpool manager’s requirements well. He was instrumental in creating a policy at Dortmund where they started buying young players to develop and sell them for huge profits.
Liverpool may work differently from Dortmund. But their ideas, combined with that of Mislintat, could prove beneficial. He does look like a great candidate to become their sporting director despite a torrid time at Arsenal between 2017 and 2019.
