Liverpool set to intensify talks with Jurgen Klopp over new deal

Liverpool reportedly want to extend the contract of Jurgen Klopp, whose current deal expires at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

According to a report from The Times, Liverpool are set to formally open talks with Jurgen Klopp over a contract extension. The German manager’s current deal at Anfield expires in 2024, but the Reds are keen on convincing him to pen a new four-year deal that would likely ensure his stay until 2026.

Brought in to replace Brendan Rodgers and help the club steer out of a difficult situation, Klopp’s tenure at Anfield has been nothing short of a dream for the Liverpool supporters.

A club almost written off in the European footballing elite at the time, Klopp launched a swift revival of the Reds, helping them clinch the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the elusive Premier League title in 2020. His triumph in the top flight was a massive achievement as Liverpool had never won the Premier League since its inception.

In addition to winning trophies, Klopp has developed a remarkable harmony within the Liverpool dressing room. He has also transformed players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander-Arnold into world-class individuals.

In light of Klopp’s unprecedented success, Liverpool want to extend his contract for a further couple of years. The German has repeatedly squashed any speculations of him extending his deal beyond the current nine-year parameter. But the Merseyside giants are confident of convincing him to prolong his stay at Anfield and help the club become even more successful.

However, the operation could be tricky as Klopp himself might want to experience a new challenge elsewhere amid links with Real Madrid. More importantly, it will be a daunting task to convince his assistant coaches Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders to continue at Anfield.

Liverpool appear to have formally started negotiations with Klopp’s representative Marc Kosicke, with an extension until 2026 currently being the subject.

It won’t be surprising to see Liverpool offering the German a lucrative contract. But money has never historically been a problem with Klopp, so the fate of this deal could greatly depend on various other factors, perhaps including the outcome of this season’s Premier League title race.
