Transfer News: Tottenham make move to sign Ollie Tanner

Transfer News: Tottenham make move to sign Ollie Tanner.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to land 19-year-old Ollie Tanner who continues to impress at non-league side Lewes.

According to The Athletic, Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur have made their move to sign non-league side Lewes’s 19-year-old sensation Ollie Tanner.

An offer was made for the youngster’s services on Saturday. As things stand, the Isthmian League side is expected to accept Spurs’ bid for the left-winger. Brighton and Hove Albion were also keen on the youngster but saw their nominal bid for him turned down by the non-league side.

The Seagulls were not just ready to fork out a transfer fee but also let the player remain on loan at Lewes for the remainder of the season. It is fair to say that the club did not bite and have instead gone on to accept a bid from Tottenham.

The Seagulls’ loss could prove to be a massive gain for Spurs, as the youngster could very well be on his way to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The teen spent the last two weeks training at Tottenham and appeared to have made an impression. Chris Powell, their academy head, was in attendance as Tanner represented Lewes on Saturday.

One aspect that could count against Tottenham is the player’s preference to move to the Amex Stadium. He believes that the Seagulls can offer him an easier path into the first team. Brighton are emerging as an impressive side under Graham Potter, and it is not difficult to see why he would want to work under the English manager.

Unlike at Brighton, Tanner will have a tougher pathway into the first team at Tottenham. Antonio Conte is keen to lead the club to glory and has often lamented the need for reinforcements in the transfer window. Given the take, it is difficult to see the Italian instead spend time nurturing talent and putting his faith in a 19-year-old who is not yet a known commodity.

The youngster has had spells with Arsenal and Charlton Athletic, but it is in the non-league circuit that he has made a name for himself. Capable of using either foot, the youngster has the potential to be a surprise package.

Spurs put their faith in a former Arsenal reject once, and that youngster turned into the finest striker we have had in the Premier League era. The north Londoners will hope that Tanner will follow a similar path and eventually make a name for himself in their first XI.

There are few better moments in football than a side discovering an unheralded talent who goes on to prove himself. Success is all the sweeter when you disprove your biggest rivals in the process.
