Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as potential suitors Christian Eriksen, as the playmaker eyes a Premier League return.

According to Fichajes, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are among the clubs in contention to sign Christian Eriksen. After a tragic summer that saw him collapse to the field due to a cardiac arrest against Finland in Denmark’s UEFA Euro 2020 opener, the midfielder is eyeing a sensational return to the pitch, with Premier League his desired destination.

Eriksen’s contract was terminated by Inter Milan in December as Serie A rules did not entail him to take to the pitch with a cardioverter-defibrillator. He is now a free agent, training with former youth club Odense in an attempt to get back to the field and make a potential return to England.

Brentford were the first club to have shown concrete interest in bringing Eriksen back to London. Reports suggest they are in talks with the playmaker over a January move to the Community Stadium.

However, the Bees are now set to face stiff competition from Tottenham and Newcastle United in the pursuit of the former Inter Milan playmaker. Both the English giants have expressed the desire to sign the player in January, with Spurs, in particular, eyeing a sensational return for the Dane.

With a tally of 65 goals and 90 assists in just over 300 competitive appearances, Eriksen amassed an impeccable track record at Tottenham during his six-and-a-half-year spell in North London before he eventually joined Inter Milan at the start of 2020.

Eriksen had also worked with Antonio Conte for almost one and a half years during their time together at Inter. It appears the Italian tactician is now favouring the playmaker’s return in light of Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso’s ongoing struggles. Alli has been already linked with a January departure from Tottenham, with Everton mooted as a potential destination.

Another option for Eriksen is Newcastle United. The Magpies are hoping to sign the Danish international to add significant quality in their creative department, as they look to stave off relegation during the second half of the campaign. A potential move to St. James’ Park could see Eriksen partner with his former Tottenham teammate Kieran Trippier, who joined the club earlier in January.

However, Brentford still remain in pole position to sign Eriksen, given the strong contingent of Danish players present in the team, coupled with the leadership of Thomas Frank.
