Manchester United have reportedly taken the lead in the chase for Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz, who is attracting widespread interest.
According to Repubblica, Manchester United are in pole position to sign Fabian Ruiz from Napoli, although the Spaniard is not their first choice target.
Manchester United could be heading towards a huge summer in terms of recruitments. The club need to reinforce many important positions in their squad, with central midfield considered the most vital area. Several high profile players have seen their names linked with a switch to Old Trafford, although a final decision will depend on several factors.
Manchester United are already considering a move for Denis Zakaria in the ongoing transfer window. This is a significant sign of the club’s intention to bring in fresh players to fit into Ralf Rangnick’s ideas.
Their other target for the summer is Fabian Ruiz, who plays for Napoli. With 18 months left on his contract, the Spaniard could move out of the Italian outfit and join one of the many high profile suitors that are chasing his signature.
Barcelona are reportedly keen on Ruiz as Xavi Hernandez is eyeing the midfielder to build a new squad in his own image. A return to Spain could be enticing, and joining the new revolution at the Catalan side might lure him out of Italy. However, he could also look into the interest from England with many clubs interested in the star.
Liverpool are one of the clubs keen, while Manchester United also have a long-standing interest. The Red Devils will probably undergo changes in the summer, with some key personnel expected to depart, including Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
The Frenchman looks increasingly likely to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season. Manchester United will need to replace him adequately and hence the links with Ruiz.
Moreover, the current midfield options in Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have not been convincing enough to be considered long term options for the club. And players like Ruiz and Zakaria, both of a similar age group, could prove to be quality replacements in central midfield for years to come.
It remains to be seen what happens with Ruiz and the reported interest from Manchester United. With other clubs also keen, the Red Devils will have to step up their efforts to sign the Spaniard.
