Newcastle United have reportedly expressed an interest in out of favour Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn.
If reports from 90 min are to be believed, Newcastle United are keeping close tabs on Steven Bergwijn. They are aware of the attacker’s precarious situation at Tottenham and believe a potential move away from north London could be on the horizon in the January transfer window.
Bergwijn has endured a disappointing stint at Spurs since joining the club nearly two years ago. In his first season at the club, the winger scored just one goal in 21 Premier League appearances, often struggling with a lack of consistency.
Things have not improved under new coaches, with the Dutchman yet to even start a single league game under the leadership of Antonio Conte. Overall in the new season, he has been involved in just three goals in 13 competitive appearances, and the attacker has fallen behind Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura in the pecking order.
Bergwijn’s struggles have now compelled the player to explore his options in the market. His representatives are hoping to find a suitable loan deal in the ongoing transfer window. While Ajax are among the clubs interested in his services, it appears Newcastle United have joined the race as well, with coach Eddie Howe apparently looking to sign at least two new forwards in January.
The Magpies have already been linked with a move for Barcelona superstar Memphis Depay, but the Dutchman has swiftly rejected Newcastle United’s approach, prompting Howe to look at potential alternatives.
Bergwijn fits the bill perfectly due to his electric pace and dribbling that could help him complement Allan Saint-Maximin in the Newcastle United frontline. Although the winger has struggled to thrive in the Premier League, he certainly has the quality to enhance NUFC’s creative department and help the club stave off relegation during the second half of the campaign.
Tottenham are yet to make a definitive decision on the future of Bergwijn, but with the Lilywhites reportedly weighing up an £18 million bid for Adama Traore, it won’t be surprising to see them offload the Dutchman — even on a permanent deal this January.
