Manchester United have reportedly made an offer to secure the signing of Argentine sensation Julian Alvarez from River Plate.
According to journalist Hernan Castillo on his Twitch channel (h/t mufcMPB on Twitter), Manchester United have tabled an offer for the signing of Julian Alvarez from Argentine giants River Plate.
The 21-year-old Alvarez is on the radars of almost every top club in Europe heading into the January transfer window after his exploits in Argentina. Having started his youth footballing journey at Club Atletico Atalaya, the forward joined River Plate at a young age in 2015. The youngster broke into the first team in 2018 and has slowly grown into a key player for Marcelo Gallardo’s side.
Alvarez, to date, has made 96 senior appearances for River Plate, producing a handy return of 36 goals and 25 assists. Half of those goals came in his 21 appearances in the 2021 Liga Profesional, sparking widespread interest from teams, with Manchester United also emerging as a suitor for the young forward.
The Red Devils have a bloated attacking unit, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and young Amad Diallo. In addition, Anthony Elanga also looks set for an important role in the senior team under new manager Ralf Rangnick after recently penning a new long-term contract.
However, it must be noted that Ronaldo will be turning 37 in a couple of months while both Cavani and Martial could be leaving the club in the upcoming January transfer window as they are unhappy with the lack of game-time. This could create room in the squad for Manchester United to bring in a new forward who can form the attacking line for the future alongside the likes of Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho.
Alvarez, to that end, has emerged as a top target for the 20-time English champions, with recent reports claiming that the club had already established contact to try and sign him up from River Plate. Now, it is being reported that the Mancunian giants have gone ahead and submitted an offer for the five-time capped Argentine international.
But, as per the update from Hernan Castillo, Bayern Munich remain very much in contention for the signing of Alvarez. And should they decide to firm up their interest in the youngster, they could emerge as the favourites to land him ahead of Manchester United. It remains to be seen if any progress is made on this front in the coming weeks, with the January transfer window almost upon us.
