Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for La Liga rivals Sevilla for the summer of 2022.
According to a report from El Nacional, Sevilla are interested in making a swoop for Real Madrid attacker Marco Asensio in the summer transfer window next year, with manager Julen Lopetegui keen on signing the Spaniard.
Asensio has been with Real Madrid since 2015 when he signed from RCD Mallorca, soon after which he was sent out on loan to Espanyol. After an impressive spell with the Catalan club, Los Blancos integrated the winger into the first team, and he quickly began displaying the qualities that had made him one of the brightest prospects in Spanish football.
Asensio soon grew into an important cog in the side for Real Madrid but has seen his stock decline over the past couple of years following his return from a serious injury had him sidelined for a long time. The 25-year-old had a mixed season last time out, and even though he has shown signs of resurgence this term, with five goals in 15 games, the Spaniard remains behind the likes of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes.
Furthermore, with Real Madrid trying to sign Kylian Mbappe in the summer transfer window on a free transfer, the Frenchman’s arrival would serve to push Asensio further down the pecking order. So, he has been considering his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Sevilla are ready to offer him a way out in the summer.
The report states that Sevilla director Monchi has already discussed the possibility of a move for Asensio with manager Julen Lopetegui, who knows the Spaniard well from his time coaching the Spanish national team and Real Madrid. The 55-year-old is believed to have given the go-ahead to a move and is prepared to hand the forward a prominent role in his project.
For his part, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez would be willing to sell Asensio should a sizable offer come along. With his contract running out in 2023, the next summer would offer Real Madrid the best chance to cash in on him in case he refuses to sign a new deal.
Apart from Sevilla, several other clubs are interested in the 25-year-old Spaniard. It remains to be seen if he stays a Real Madrid player beyond the ongoing campaign and leaves for pastures new.
