Leeds United have reportedly been mentioned as a possible suitor for Nahitan Nandez, with Tottenham and Inter Milan also keen on signing him.
According to Calciomercato, Leeds United are interested in making a move for Nahitan Nandez in the January transfer window. The Whites will face intense competition from Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur for the Cagliari star.
Nahitan Nandez’s situation at Cagliari is causing some concerns to their board and president. They are torn between keeping him or sanctioning a sale in the upcoming window as interest in the midfielder remains high.
The Uruguayan international’s agent recently asked the club president to accept a meaningful offer from a big-name club in January, which indicates Nandez wants to explore a new challenge to further his career. Cagliari had recently asked Tottenham to pa €36 million to sign Nandez, which happens to be the release clause in his contract.
Tottenham have been one of the clubs showing a serious interest in the midfielder, who has a contract until 2024 with the Serie A club. Reports suggest Cagliari may be willing to reduce their asking price if clubs negotiate by making a substantial offer.
Inter Milan have also entered the fray and need an extra man in their squad since the recent termination of Christian Eriksen’s contract. For Nandez, it would be a comfortable decision to continue in familiar Serie A surroundings rather than moving abroad.
However, a move to the Premier League will be challenging and financially lucrative compared to anywhere else. Leeds are the latest team to show an interest in the midfielder, with the Yorkshire club eyeing January signings to offset their injury issues.
An injury wave has hit the Whites in torrid fashion. They demonstrated their bare squad after struggling to field senior players against Arsenal. Therefore, Leeds are looking at new options from the transfer window to make up the numbers on the quality front, with midfield the area in focus.
Leeds are also linked with Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira, but they might switch their attention to a player with a better fitness record. In that case, Nandez, who has been fit and playing regularly for Cagliari this season, could be the better fit.
It remains to be seen if Leeds can afford the Uruguayan midfielder’s high asking price. While his numbers are promising, Nandez will certainly provide Marcelo Bielsa with a different option than what some of his current choices do.
