Newcastle United discover what they need to fork out to land Atletico Madrid star and English international Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Premier League side Newcastle United can sign Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window if they can fork out £15 million for his services.

The English international has been a revelation since moving to the Wanda Metropolitano in 2019. He has since made 84 appearances, contributing 11 assists in the process. Trippier also played a key role in Atletico’s La Liga triumph last season and was named in the La Liga team of the season.

Diego Simeone has a high opinion of the 31-year-old and has seen his side struggle in his absence. However, with him not getting any younger and his contract in Madrid running out in eighteen months, it could be now or never for Atletico. They appear ready to part ways with the full-back as long as their asking price is met and they can bring in a replacement.

In Newcastle, Atletico have the right club who can make an offer for the player. The Magpies are struggling to stay afloat in the Premier League and have looked vulnerable in defence and clueless in attack. In Trippier they have an experienced player who can contribute on both fronts.

Not only is he an able defender but also a dependable attacker down the right flank. To add to it, he is also versatile enough to do the same job on the other wing. Trippier is also a deft hand at set pieces and will add some much-needed bite to the Tyneside outfit’s attack. This makes him a considerable upgrade over current Newcastle starter Javier Manquillo.

The full-back has a history of working with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe during their time at Burnley. Howe signed the player permanently from Manchester City in 2012. The Magpies boss could do with some solid signings in January, and Trippier could do the job.

The player, for his part, appears keen to return home and had previously attracted attention from Manchester United. With Ralf Rangnick now at the helm, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils will rekindle their efforts to sign the player in January.

As things stand, the ball is in Newcastle”s court. Forking out the money will not be an issue for the Magpies given their newfound riches, not to mention the desperation to escape the relegation dogfight. Moving to Tyneside is akin to taking a step backwards compared to the level of success achievable at Atletico. Whether Trippier is ready to take that hit remains to be seen.
