Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Giovani Lo Celso has been linked with a return to Real Betis in the January transfer window.
A recent report from Fichajes has offered an update on the future of Giovani Lo Celso. The talented playmaker is among the players facing an uncertain future at Tottenham Hotspur, and it appears he is keen on sealing a potential return to his former stomping ground, Benito Villamarin, the home of Real Betis.
The Spanish outfit remains interested in bringing their former star back to their home turf. Their current financial situation makes it almost impossible for them to sign Lo Celso, but they could potentially strike a loan deal in January if they are able to offload some star players, including the likes of Andres Guardado and Guido Rodriguez, who was a target for West Ham earlier in the season.
A product of the Rosario Central youth academy, Lo Celso was on loan at Real Betis during the 2018/19 campaign. He made a total of 45 competitive appearances, scoring 16 while producing six assists. It compelled the Spanish outfit to make his move from PSG permanent for €22 million in the summer of 2019.
But the Argentine was sent out on loan to Tottenham in the same transfer window for a staggering loan fee of €16 million. With just two assists in 28 league games, the playmaker had a slow start to his career in England, but Spurs still made his move permanent by paying another €32 million to offset the departure of Christian Eriksen.
Since then, though, Lo Celso has never really managed to make an impression. He has largely struggled with injuries, including a hamstring problem in late 2020 that kept him out for almost three months. The playmaker has featured in just over 200 minutes of league football this season and is currently nursing from a knee injury he picked up last month.
The 25-year-old’s struggles have led to speculations surrounding his future, with Real Betis now keen on snapping him up in January, albeit on a loan deal. Lo Celso isn’t the only Spurs playmaker to be linked with a January exit, as his teammate Dele Alli has also become a subject of interest for Newcastle United.
Real Betis, for their part, are trying to bring multiple ex-players back to Benito Villamarin. Apart from Lo Celso, they have been linked with a move for former midfielder Dani Ceballos, who is a far more realistic target for the Spanish giants.
