Real Madrid have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Robert Lewandowski as Bayern Munich plan to retain the Poland international’s services.

According to a report from Defensa Central, Real Madrid’s hopes of securing the signing of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski have suffered a blow with the German club’s chairman, Oliver Kahn, admitting that they intend to keep hold of him for a long time.

Lewandowski has firmly established himself as one of the deadliest strikers in the game during his time in the Bundesliga, first with Borussia Dortmund and then Bayern. The 33-year-old has played an integral role in the success that Die Roten have achieved since joining the club in 2014, winning several personal accolades along the way.

The Poland captain has been in red-hot form in the current campaign, having already netted 27 goals in just 21 matches across all competitions. But with his contract expiring in a little over 18 months, speculations over his future have been doing the rounds for quite some time now, with Real Madrid emerging as a potential suitor.

The Merengues are in the market for reinforcements in the No. 9 role, with Karim Benzema not getting any younger. At the same time, Luka Jovic and Mariano Diaz have struggled to perform when given opportunities. Erling Haaland of Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe remain the top priorities for Florentino Perez & co. heading into the summer window.

However, Lewandowski has emerged as a transfer target for Real Madrid, especially if they were to miss out on signing either Haaland or Mbappe. Recent reports had even indicated the player himself is keen on making the jump to the Santiago Bernabeu. But that might not come to fruition as Bayern Munich are unwilling to offload their star striker.

“If Robert performs as he is doing now, nothing better can happen to us than to have a player like that with us in the long term . I think he can play. at this level a few more years and score a lot of goals. Of course that’s what we prefer,” Bayern Munich chairman Oliver Kahn said in a recent interview, in the process, dealing a blow to Real Madrid’s hopes of signing him.

It now remains to be seen whether the German champions can convince the former Lech Poznan hitman to sign a new contract before he enters the final year of his current deal next summer. As for Real Madrid, Lewandowski was not a priority target for the club, who will continue to focus on their efforts to land Haaland and Mbappe.
