Liverpool striker Divock Origi has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Turkish giants Besiktas ahead of the upcoming January window.
According to a report from Turkish publication Fotomac, Besiktas are considering making a January swoop for Liverpool centre-forward Divock Origi, who has struggled for game-time at Anfield.
The 26-year-old Belgian international has been on Liverpool’s books since 2014 when he signed from LOSC Lille. But he has never really established himself as a regular starter for the Merseyside giants. Origi has had a couple of loan spells away at Lille (2014/15) and VfL Wolfsburg (2017/18), post which he has stayed put at Anfield.
To date, he has amassed 169 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, most of which have come from the bench. He has scored 39 goals and chalked up 16 assists in the process. While he may not have been a regular, Origi has attained a cult-hero status at Anfield because of some of the important goals he has scored, playing a role in the club’s Champions League and Premier League success.
Origi has hardly featured in the ongoing campaign but has impressed when given a chance. In his nine appearances across all competitions, the 26-year-old has netted four goals, including the late winner against Wolves this past weekend.
There has been an interest in his services from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United, and now Besiktas have also emerged as a suitor for the 26-year-old Liverpool striker. The report claims that the Turkish heavyweights are unhappy with the contributions of on-loan Chelsea centre-forward Michy Batshuayi who has scored four times in 11 games at an average of one every 208 minutes.
With Besiktas languishing at ninth in the Super Lig table, the management are keen on improving their fortunes and see Origi as someone who can help them in the second half of the season. To that end, they are now considering a January move for the Belgian international.
The report bizarrely claims that Besiktas would be willing to take Origi on loan in January and offer Batshuayi to Liverpool till the end of the season, at which point the Belgian would return to his parent club, Chelsea. As for Origi, it is said that the Black Eagles will consider making his signing permanent in the summer.
Klopp and Liverpool value Origi’s contributions. At the same time, the club understands the player’s intentions to play regularly. But they might not be willing to sanction an exit in January as the Reds will be losing star men Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane next month due to their impending participation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
