Barcelona have reportedly lodged an enquiry with Manchester United over the possibility of signing misfiring forward Anthony Martial in January.
According to a report from Catalan publication ARA, Barcelona have approached Manchester United over a potential move for struggling striker Anthony Martial in the upcoming transfer window.
Martial has been with Manchester United for over six years, having arrived from AS Monaco in 2015 in a mega-money deal. The Frenchman enjoyed a scintillating debut season at Old Trafford but struggled to repeat his heroics in the subsequent campaigns, especially struggling during the Jose Mourinho era.
While he looked back to his best in the 2019/20 campaign, Martial was back to his floundering ways last season before injury struck. Back to full fitness this term, the 25-year-old has found it hard to break into the side due to intense competition for places. Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood have been preferred over the Frenchman in the No. 9 slot, limiting him to just four starts in all competitions.
Martial had been heavily linked with an exit in the summer transfer window, but Manchester United decided to give him another shot at coming good. However, with the France international failing to make the most of whatever opportunities that have come his way, the Red Devils may be receptive to offers for him in January or the summer.
Barcelona are now reportedly looking to capitalise on the situation and have enquired to assess the potential availability of the former AS Monaco starlet ahead of the January transfer window. The Catalan heavyweights are on the lookout for a new forward, having been hit hard by injuries this season.
Both Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati have had fitness issues, while Sergio Aguero has been sidelined for the foreseeable future due to a heart condition. Martin Braithwaite has also missed a large chunk of the campaign due to an injury, whereas summer signing Luuk de Jong is out of favour. Given the situation, a new attacker becomes a necessary signing for the Blaugrana.
A move for Manchester City ace Ferran Torres has been mooted heavily, with Barca’s sporting director Mateu Alemany and CEO Ferran Reverter in England to discuss a transfer. During that time, they have also approached United to get information about Martial and his situation, the report claims.
Apart from the Frenchman, Barcelona have also been linked with his Manchester United teammate Edinson Cavani. So, it will be interesting to see who the La Liga bigwigs bring in once the mid-season trading period is open for business at the turn of the year.
