Premier League duo Everton and Leicester City are keeping tabs on the availability of promising young Barcelona starlet Arnau Comas who could move on in the summer.
According to Cadena SER journalist Santi Ovalle, Premier League clubs Everton and Leicester City are keeping an eye on Barcelona youngster Arnau Comas, who could be on the move this summer.
The 21-year-old came through the club’s famed La Masia academy and will be a free agent next summer. However, there is some uncertainty surrounding the issue as other sources reveal Barcelona can extend his deal by two more years.
This will give the Catalans two more years to convince the player that his future lies at Camp Nou and provide them with leverage in contract negotiations. The player, for his part too, appears to be keen on succeeding at Barcelona.
Several young players have moved from Spain to England in the past and enjoyed varying levels of success. A very promising centre-back, Comas has the potential to become an excellent player given the right guidance.
Everton and Leicester are managed by Rafael Benitez and Brendan Rodgers, respectively. Both have shown themselves to be fairly competent at developing talent and are not afraid to use young players when needed. If Comas does not have a future in Barcelona, moving to England could certainly be a positive option.
Jonny Evans is not getting any younger, while Caglar Soyuncu appears to have gone off the boil. With Wesley Fofana out injured, the time may be ripe for Rodgers to make a young addition to his backline. Everton, for their part, do have four choices in Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina. At this point, Leicester would be a better bet in comparison to the Toffees.
Having joined Barcelona from Girona in 2010, Comas rose through the ranks and is now a regular for the club’s B team. At 21, he should be taking his first steps into first-team action. Barcelona, for their part, are currently in a limbo and need a massive overhaul.
With the club’s finances strained, new manager Xavi may need to turn to the academy’s talents to bolster his ranks. Gerard Pique’s age is showing, and Clement Lenglet has failed to reach the levels expected of him. With Samuel Umtiti also struggling with injuries, the door may be opened for Comas to step up and make himself counted.
The likes of Ansu Fati, Gavi, Eric Garcia, Pedri, among others, can form a young core who can lay the foundations for an era of dominance. There is no reason why Comas cannot join the lot if he plays his cards right. In the club’s darkest hour, it remains to be seen if La Masia will once again come to their rescue. Whether Comas will stay put and wait for his opportunity or whether his patience will run out before that remains to be seen.
