Newcastle United are reportedly among the clubs keen on signing Lorenzo Insigne, whose contract with Napoli runs out at the end of the season.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Newcastle United are the latest entrant in the race to sign Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the ongoing campaign.

A product of the Napoli youth setup, Insigne has spent his entire playing career with the Partenopei barring a couple of loan spells just before he made his breakthrough. An ever-present in the side for the longest time, the 30-year-old has racked up 411 appearances for the Italians, scoring 114 goals and setting up 89 more.

Capped 53 times by the Italian national team, Insigne was a key part of the side that lifted the UEFA Euro 2020 earlier this year. With him entering the final year of his contract with Napoli, there have been a lot of speculations surrounding his future. However, he has not let it affect his performance levels, bagging five goals and four assists in 14 matches so far in the new season.

Given his situation, several top clubs are already queuing up to sign Insigne on a free transfer. Everton have been credited with an interest, while there have been reports of interest from Manchester United as well. Now, Newcastle United have made their presence felt in the pursuit of the 30-year-old Italian international.

Newcastle are aiming high following the takeover by the Saudi-based consortium. The Magpies have been linked with several high-profile names in the transfer market as they look to usher in a new era at St. James’ Park. However, the first order of business for new manager Eddie Howe would be to stave off the threat of relegation with the Tynesiders yet to pick up a single win in the Premier League this term.

Nonetheless, should they avoid the drop, a move for someone of Insigne’s calibre would be a coup for Newcastle. The 30-year-old forward would add great quality to their attacking unit, taking some burden off the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron, who have had to do the heavy lifting going forward for the Magpies.

While a move to St. James’ Park might not offer Insigne trophy prospects, at 30, he would be looking at his final big contract and Newcastle, given their deep pockets, can offer him a very lucrative deal. So, it remains to be seen if there is any development on this front come summer. However, for any move to come to fruition, the Toon surviving relegation will be crucial.
