Transfer News: Juventus want €20 million for Tottenham target Weston McKennie

Juventus have reportedly slapped a price tag of €20 million on midfielder Weston McKennie, who continues to be a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur have learned how much it will take to sign USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie from Juventus in January.

McKennie burst onto the scenes at German outfit Schalke and established himself as one of the brightest young midfielders in Bundesliga before Juventus swooped in for him in the summer of 2020. Signed initially on loan, the 23-year-old made a solid impression in the early parts of the last season, prompting the Bianconeri to land him permanently.

However, McKennie’s form somewhat declined in the second half of the campaign while he did not make the best of starts to the ongoing season either. Plus, with there being some off-the-field infractions, speculations were mounting that the USMNT star would be sold off in the summer itself, although no move materialised.

Massimiliano Allegri, however, did not seem to favour McKennie much, which led to rumours of a January exit circulating constantly. The midfielder has managed to work his way back into the manager’s plans, though, and has made eight Serie A appearances scoring two goals in the process. Despite his resurgence, Juve remain open to selling the 23-year-old due to their financial woes.

And, Tottenham, who were linked with a move for McKennie in the past, remain very interested. The Lilywhites have had an up-and-down season leading to the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, who has been replaced by former Juventus manager Antonio Conte.

While the Italian tactician has his list of transfer targets, club sporting director Fabio Paratici remains a huge admirer of McKennie and wants to sign him for the north London outfit. With the futures of Dele Alli and Tanguy Ndombele not secure and Giovani Lo Celso severely underperforming, Tottenham could do with a midfielder like McKennie, who offers a physical presence as well as the attacking thrust.

Now, Tottenham have learnt that they will need to shell out a sum of €20 million if they wish to land the 23-year-old come January. The report, however, does add that Juventus might decide against cashing in on him should he continue on the recent upward trajectory and establish himself as a key member of the team.

Conte’s arrival could also affect McKennie’s chances of joining Tottenham, as it is unclear whether their new manager favours a move for the 23-year-old. So, it remains to be seen what the future holds in store for the former Schalke ace.
