Brazilian giants Palmeiras have shown interest in Manchester United star Edinson Cavani whose contract at Old Trafford expires in 2022.

According to Mercado da Bola (h/t Canal do Nicola on Youtube), Brazilian side Palmeiras are interested in securing the services of Manchester United star Edinson Cavani in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer.

The Uruguayan veteran originally signed for Manchester United on a one-year deal in the summer of 2020. However, his performances hit the mark at Old Trafford, forcing the club to extend his stay for another season. As things stand, the 34-year-old looks set to move on at the end of his tenure.

Cavani earlier admitted his desire to return to South America after spending 14 years in Europe. Despite his advanced age, he still appears to have a few seasons left in him. Palmeiras are set for interesting times ahead, with Leila Pereira taking over as president in December. He is keen to provide the club with financial might, making big wage signings a reality.

Cavani is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with non-English sides from January 1, 2022. The Brazilian side can assure themselves of the player’s services should talks go fine in the winter window. With the FIFA World Cup set to take place next year, it would be in everyone’s best interests to reach an agreement before the tournament.

The 34-year-old ended the 2020/21 season in top form. However, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has forced him to take a backseat in this campaign. He has so far been limited to just 274 minutes of action this season. Just two of his eight appearances have come as a starter so far.

Given Ronaldo’s good run of form and stature within the club, it is difficult to see Manchester United drop him in favour of Cavani anytime soon. Given his performances in the past, it can be considered unfair that the Uruguayan international has to play a supporting role now.

He can have a better fortune should he decide to return to South America. More playing time could be in the offing, plus the possibility of playing in his home continent would also appeal. Despite playing for five different clubs in his long and illustrious career, just one of them – Danubio was located in South America.

Losing Cavani would also be a blow for United going into the 2022/23 season. Ronaldo is not getting any younger and Anthony Martial continues to be inconsistent. While Mason Greenwood can do a job upfront, Jadon Sancho’s indifferent form could see him deployed more on the wing instead.

The veteran striker brings not just high-level competence but also a wealth of experience to the fold. One of the finest strikers of his generation, Cavani still has a few years left in him. As things stand, the chapter involving Manchester United appears to be drawing to a close.
