Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has reportedly rejected a new contract offer amid interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.
According to a report from 90min.com, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool have been handed a major boost in pursuit of Leicester City midfield star Youri Tielemans as he has rejected a new contract offer from the Foxes.
Formerly of RSC Anderlecht and AS Monaco, Tielemans joined Leicester City in January 2019, initially on a loan deal, before his transfer was made permanent in the summer that year for a fee of £40 million. The 24-year-old has become a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Midlands’ club, while also going on to establish himself as one of the best in his position in the Premier League.
To date, Tielemans has made 121 appearances for Leicester City, scoring 19 goals, one of which came in the finals of the FA Cup last season, as he led the team to their first trophy since the 2015/16 Premier League title. However, his future at the King Power Stadium has been called into question as his contract runs out in 2023 and talks over an extension have not gone well.
Indeed, as per the aforementioned report, Tielemans has rejected Leicester City’s latest contract proposal and is weighing up his options, which has handed a major boost to his suitors, that include the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Real Madrid need reinforcements in the middle of the park as Luka Modric is in the final phase of his illustrious career while his contract also expires at the end of the season. With Toni Kroos also not getting any younger and the likes of Isco and Dani Ceballos not part of the plans, the Merengues interest in Tielemans is very much justified.
As for Manchester United, the Red Devils are also in the market for new midfielders amid question marks over the future of Paul Pogba. The Frenchman’s contract runs out next year while Donny van de Beek also continues to be linked with an exit amid a shortage of game-time. A move for someone like Tielemans with proven Premier League pedigree would, thus, make a lot of sense for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co.
Liverpool, on the other hand, allowed Georginio Wijnaldum to leave the club last summer without drafting in a replacement. With the likes of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner all not getting any younger, it becomes imperative for Jurgen Klopp to bring in a new and younger midfielder like Tielemans – something that club icon Jamie Redknapp has urged the Reds to do.
In addition to the three aforementioned clubs, Chelsea are also said to be holding an interest in Tielemans while the likes of Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation. With the 24-year-old Belgian rejecting a new contract offer from Leicester, interest in him is likely to spike up further and it remains to be seen where he ends up come next season.
