Transfer News: Everton closely monitoring Connor Pye

Everton are reportedly keeping tabs on Morecambe FC’s 17-year-old defensive prospect Connor Pye, who has been compared to Andrew Robertson of Liverpool.

According to a report from Football Insider, Everton have set their sights on Morecambe FC’s teenage prodigy Connor Pye, who has been hailed as the “next Andrew Robertson”.

Pye started out at the academy of Wigan Athletic before making the switch to Morecambe’s youth setup in the summer of 2020. The 17-year-old left-sided full-back has made rather impressive progress over the past year, so much so that he has been regularly training with the first-team in the ongoing campaign.

Pye has been on the bench for a couple of League One games so far while he made his debut for the senior team in Morecambe’s EFL Trophy contest against Hartlepool United, where he was named the Man of the Match.

Pye’s development and progress has alerted a lot of clubs in the Premier League and the EFL Championship that have been scouting him, with Everton also said to be among the admirers of the 17-year-old left-back.

The Toffees are in the market for a new young left-back after having lost promising prospect Thierry Small this summer. The youngster terminated his scholarship contract with the Merseyside giants to join Southampton earlier this summer. Niels Nkounkou, meanwhile, is not favoured by manager Rafael Benitez and has been loaned out to Standard Liege.

This has left Everton with just Lucas Digne as the out-and-out left-back in the squad, something that they are keen on addressing. And, as per the report, Pye is seen as a solution for the problem given the potential that he has shown in his burgeoning career with Morecambe.

The report further adds that Everton will have just £9 million to spend during the January transfer window. That has meant that the Toffees will be targeting loan deals and cut-price transfers, with Pye seen as an option from the latter category.

Likened to Liverpool superstar Andrew Robertson, whether the teenage prospect ends up making the switch to Merseyside in a couple of months remains to be seen. For now, Pye is on the radars of Everton, as well as several other clubs in England.
