Predicted Manchester United lineup against Atalanta: Rashford starts; McTominay in for Matic

The Mason Greenwood fiasco is a bad look on Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford is in line for a start while Scott McTominay should replace Nemanja Matic when Manchester United face Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United will be itching to put an end to their torrid run of form and get back to winning ways when they clash against Atalanta in Group F of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford.

Leading into the game, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been dealt with any fresh injury setbacks. In fact, there is some positive news as Fred and Edinson Cavani are back in contention for selection after missing out on the weekend while Anthony Martial has also returned to training, although tonight’s game comes too soon for the Frenchman.

Raphael Varane remains sidelined with the injury he picked up during the international break. Captain Harry Maguire, however, has not suffered any issues after being hurried back into action for the weekend encounter against Leicester City. Speaking to the club media on the eve of the game, Solskjaer said: “Anthony joined in training today but he’s still not fit enough to join us [for the match].

“Harry’s not had any reaction so he’s fine and good to go. We didn’t lose anyone else from the game through injury at the weekend, so we’re, more or less, a full squad. Raphael is still not with us but Edinson and Fred are back available which is good for us,” he added.

The Red Devils will be expected to line up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation at Old Trafford, with David de Gea once again slotting in between the goal posts ahead of Dean Henderson. With Varane unavailable, Victor Lindelof and Maguire are likely to hold on to their places in the lineup, although Eric Bailly is an option in place of the former.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be available for selection after his two-game ban was halved. The ex-Crystal Palace star is a certainty to feature at right-back while there is no looking past Luke Shaw on the left side of the Manchester United defence. Paul Pogba will hold on to his spot in the midfield double pivot but will see a change of partners as Scott McTominay should replace Nemanja Matic.

Up ahead, Bruno Fernandes is a certain starter in the No. 10 role while Mason Greenwood’s form means he is also guaranteed to feature from the kick-off on Wednesday night. The Englishman will slot in on the right flank while compatriot and fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford ought to replace Jadon Sancho in the lineup on the left-wing, after scoring on his return from injury against Leicester.

Despite Cavani’s availability, Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to get the nod as the No. 9 for Manchester United when Atalanta come visiting to Old Trafford.

Manchester United Predicted XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Pogba, Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford, Ronaldo.
