Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are among the clubs keeping close tabs on English under-21 internationa Etienne Green.
According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have closely monitored the progress of Etienne Green. The St. Etienne goalkeeper has raised many eyebrows with his performances in Ligue 1 this season, with both the Premier League giants hoping to make a summer swoop for the youngster.
Born in Colchester, Green has been playing football in France since a young age. He is eligible to play for France and initially starting out as a French youth player, the goalkeeper has recently switched allegiances. He was even reportedly considered for a maiden call-up to the England squad by Gareth Southgate.
Green currently plies his trade for St. Etienne. He had been a part of the club’s youth academy since 2010, at the age of ten. The shot-stopper has enjoyed a swift rise to prominence since, even making his professional breakthrough during the backend of last season, making eight appearances in Ligue 1.
This time around, the 21-year-old has managed to become the out and out number one for St. Etienne, especially after the summer exit of Jessy Moulin. Although the English under-21 international has started the new season with no clean sheets in eight matches, he has made multiple saves throughout the campaign so far.
Green’s performances have not gone unnoticed either, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly scouting the Colchester native. The Lilywhites are currently scouring the market for a new goalkeeper who can replace the ageing Hugo Lloris next season while providing competition for Pierluigi Gollini.
The club had recently been linked with a move for Sam Johnstone, but one would imagine Green would be a far cheaper option due to his lack of experience in the Premier League. However, Tottenham are expected to face stiff competition in their pursuit of the St. Etienne shot-stopper, who is a subject of interest for fellow London club West Ham as well.
Much Tottenham, the Hammers are looking for a new goalkeeper, one who can replace the ageing Lukasz Fabianski while Alphonse Areola’s loan contract expires at the end of the season.
Etienne Green fits the bill perfectly for West Ham due to his massive 1.90m frame and the fact that he has already shown a lot of promise at the highest level of football. And with Tottenham also keen, we might be in for an interesting transfer duel next season in pursuit of the English under-21 international next summer.
