Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey and have offered a three-year deal over a move in January.

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Newcastle United have entered the race to sign out-of-favour Juventus playmaker Aaron Ramsey and have offered the player a handsome three-year contract to entice him to leave Turin for Tyneside this January. The Welshman is understood to be considering a return to the Premier League as his struggles at Juventus continue.

Newcastle’s newly-found wealth under the new ownership of a Saudi-backed consortium has made them the protagonists of the rumour mill as they are looking for quality reinforcements in the market to set them on track for their high ambitions. The Newcastle hierarchy wants a big enough name – whom they can realistically get – to put their stamp among the upper echelons of the transfer market.

After starting his footballing journey at his boyhood club Cardiff City, Ramsey signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2008, and after several successful loan stints, he was a massive hit at the Emirates during his eleven-year stint and became a cult hero among the Gunners fans for his FA Cup-winning goals.

The 30-year-old signed for Italian giants Juventus on a free transfer back in 2019 but has had a mixed spell at the Turin-based club so far and failed to achieve the heights expected of him.

He was a kind of regular fixture under Andrea Pirlo, but with Massimiliano Allegri returning at the helm, game-time has been scarce for the Welshman. This is shown by the fact that he only had 106 minutes of footballing action this season. However, the Wales international has recently shown flashes of his brilliance for his national side at Euro 2020.

The Bianconeri are said to be desperate to get his massive salary off their wage bill. Ramsey still has another 21 months left on his €7 million yearly deal. They are likely to accept a low-ball offer to sanction his sale. This situation has piqued interest from a host of Premier League sides. But considering the player’s massive wage demands, Newcastle could be the frontrunner for his signature.

The Magpies have drawn a long list of potential targets to be their statement signing, and Ramsey is one of the names that fits the bill. The Welsh international is a natural playmaker, regarded as a top player and has plenty of English top-flight experience. Newcastle currently have Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock in their midfield but lack a quality passer bar Jonjo Shelvey, who has his injury issues and provides less dynamism.

Adding a playmaker of Ramsey’s ilk would drastically improve their midfield, but there should be an air of caution with niggling injuries constantly hampering the Welshman throughout his career and at 30 years old, he hardly commands any sell-on value. If things went bad, it could turn out to be a Michael Owen-esque disaster. It now remains to be seen if Ramsey does end up sealing a move to the North-East of England in January.
