Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Real Madrid icon Gareth Bale on a Bosman move next summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Newcastle United are drawing up a list of big-name players to swoop in for in next summer’s transfer window. And one of the candidates on their radar is Gareth Bale, who looks set to depart Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of the season.

Gareth Bale has endured a topsy turvy ride at Real Madrid since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur i the summer of 2013. While he will always remain an icon for some of his contributions during their dominant run in Europe, the Welshman has been on a constantly downward spiral over the last few years, with fitness issues hampering him a great deal.

To date, Bale has amassed a decent enough tally of 106 goals and 68 assists in 254 appearances for Real Madrid. However, since returning from a fine loan spell back at Tottenham, the 32-year-old has struggled to make his mark at Real Madrid, managing just the solitary goal in three outings so far.

With his Real Madrid contract winding down approaching the summer transfer window, it looks like his stint with the Merengues is drawing to a close. There have even been suggestions that Bale could be set to announce his retirement soon despite his recent comments about being in a better environment at Real Madrid.

Bale, though, has no shortage of suitors either, with one soon-to-be big-name suitor in the hunt for his signature. We are, of course, talking about Newcastle United, who are now owned by the richest owners of a football club in the world following the takeover from the Saudi Arabian-backed Public Investment Fund.

The Magpies are now looking to undergo a squad rebuild to scale the heights of the Premier League and establish themselves as one of the powerhouses of European football. With that in mind, Newcastle have shown an interest in many-a-marquee name, including Edinson Cavani, Keylor Navas and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Now, Bale has also emerged as a potential target for Newcastle, who are looking to bring him in to St. James’ Park on a Bosman move next summer once his Real Madrid contract expires.

However, considering his relationship with Tottenham, it will be interesting to see if Bale would be open to joining Newcastle or ends up going elsewhere. Having said that, it goes without saying that Bale would be a top addition to the Magpies’ squad, if signed.
