Manchester United have reportedly rekindled their interest in Norwich City defender Max Aarons, who can be a viable alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

According to 90 min, Manchester United are set to reignite their pursuit of Norwich City right-back Max Aarons in the upcoming January transfer window.

The young Englishman is, despite his age, an experienced player with 137 first-team appearances for the Canaries, scoring five goals and assisting 13 more. Aarons was a two-time nominee for the EFL Team of the Year and was also the EFL Young Player of the Year in 2019.

In his second season in the Premier League, the 21-year-old is already a seasoned performer and could be on the verge of taking the next step in his career. Adept in both attack and defence, he is a two-way defender well versed in the modern role of a full-back.

Manchester United already have the defensively solid Aaron Wan-Bissaka in their ranks and the promising Diogo Dalot at right-back. The former is lacking in offence, and the latter has failed to showcase any semblance of consistency.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to have two players he can depend on in each position. Manchester United do have two in Wan-Bissaka and Dalot, but the fact that they are after Aarons could indicate that the latter’s position may be far from secure.

The Norwegian manager is keen to bring in a player who can compete with Wan-Bissaka rather than replace him. A right-back was on the agenda earlier this summer, with Kieran Trippier a prime target.

Atletico Madrid were, however, unwilling to play ball and the Englishman stayed on at the Wanda Metropolitano. Manchester United scouts have now been instructed to look at options apart from Trippier as they seek to address the right-back spot.

The Red Devils loaned out Brandon Williams to Norwich this summer and could use the youngster to land Aarons. Williams has struggled in the recent past, and it is debatable if he has what it takes to succeed at Old Trafford. Another youngster out on loan Ethan Laird is also being looked at. Manchester United, however, do not believe he is ready to challenge for a first-team spot.

The same cannot be said of Aarons, who has already proven himself to be a dogged competitor. The Manchester United scouts have already compiled an impressive dossier on the 21-year-old but face competition from Manchester City for his signature. They are also keeping tabs on Rangers right-back Nathan Patterson. Whether either of them arrive at Old Trafford come January remains to be seen.
