Manchester United are reportedly among the clubs that are keen on signing Marco Asensio from Real Madrid.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Marco Asensio could soon be deemed to be surplus to requirements by Real Madrid. The Spanish international, though, has no shortage of suitors, with Manchester United among the clubs that are interested in signing him.

Marco Asensio has had a tough ride at Real Madrid since returning from a long-term knee injury last year. The 2020/21 season was one to forget, as the 25-year-old forward struggled to perform on a consistent basis over the past 14-15 months. And the same has been the case at the onset of 2021/22.

While he has scored three goals in seven appearances so far, all three of those goals came in one game, against former club Real Mallorca. With his struggles showing no signs of letting up, things seem to have reached a head at Real Madrid, who are ready to offload him and others to raise the money to land Erling Haaland. And Manchester United have emerged as one of his suitors.

The interest from Manchester United is interesting considering they bolstered their attack in the summer transfer window by signing Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. While Sancho has not been able to make his mark yet at Old Trafford, he is a player who is touted to have a bright future at Old Trafford.

In addition, it is important to note that Manchester United now have a loaded attacking unit wherein the likes of Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani do not even start regularly while Marcus Rashford will be added to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s options once he returns to action, possibly later this month.

So, spending around €40 million on Asensio, which is the amount Real Madrid are demanding for him, does not seem to be a prudent move, especially at a time when signing a holding midfielder ought to be a priority for Manchester United.

Meanwhile, apart from the Red Devils, the likes of Sevilla and Napoli are also hot on the trails of the 25-year-old while Arsenal have also been linked with the Real Madrid forward. Having said that, with Manchester United reportedly interested, it remains to be seen if they make their move for Asensio and swoop him away from Real Madrid.
