Transfer News: West Ham initiate talks to sign Weston McKennie

West Ham United have reportedly initiated discussions with Juventus over the possibility of signing USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie.

According to a report from Football Insider, West Ham United have held talks with Serie A giants Juventus as they work on a deal to secure the transfer of Weston McKennie.

The 23-year-old midfielder joined the Bianconeri in the summer last year, initially on a loan deal, but an impressive debut season in Turin prompted Juventus to make his transfer permanent. However, despite having done so, it seems like the Italian giants are now considering the prospect of selling him.

Off-the-field issues have become a concern as McKennie has broke Covid-19 guidelines on a couple of occasions already while he does not seem to be favoured a great deal by returning manager Massimiliano Allegri, considering that he has started only three games so far this season for Juventus.

With there being a possibility of a sale, West Ham United are trying to engineer a transfer for McKennie and are said to have already opened talks with the Bianconeri to work out the details of a move.

West Ham had a decent transfer window wherein they strengthened their midfield with the loan signing of Alex Kral. However, there is no certainty that his signing would be made permanent at the end of the season. In addition, club captain Mark Noble is set to retire at the end of the season as well, which would leave a hole in the midfield department for the Hammers.

As a result, David Moyes & co. are looking to secure the signing of a new midfielder, with Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey also said to be on the radars of the east London giants. And now, Ramsey’s teammate McKennie, too, has emerged as a transfer target for Moyes & co.

Despite his infractions off the field, McKennie remains a talented footballer, who at 23, has his best years ahead of him. A 25-time capped USMNT international, he would add power, energy and drive to this West Ham United midfield unit, which ought to complement well with the likes of Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

And, with negotiations already underway, it will be interesting to see if West Ham are able to strike a deal with Juventus to secure the signing of McKennie.
